Stop At: Nicosia, Nicosia, Nicosia District

To get the most out of your venture through one of Europe’s most intriguing capitals, being the last divided city in the world that dates back to the Bronze Age, you should take a walk in its old town and discover this true gem of an old city. The old city centre, surrounded by Venetian Walls dating from 1567, is full of art, culture and architecture, with museums, galleries, shops, bars and restaurants nestled in narrow alleys. The city’s historic past unfolds into a unique labyrinth of old churches and medieval buildings.

One of Nicosia’s most popular areas is Ledra Street. This cobbled area is a high street full of tradition with shops, local cafés and bars. Most of the buildings here still carry their 18th century charm. Parallel to the bustling Ledra Street, runs Onasagorou Street, offering a more authentic experience of the city.

near the village of Nikitari; it is what remains from the Monastery of Panagia of the Phorbia, and
therefore its name: Phorbiotissa. We draw the information about this appellation from the
present inscriptions on the wall paintings of the church.
The Virgin Mary is called “Phorbiotissa” in one of these inscriptions that is read on a wall
painting above the entrance of the church leading from the narthex into the nave.

Lania is one of the grape cultivating villages of the island. Whilst its residents were mainly employed in the cultivation of vines - and the production of wines, Zivania (spirit) and Soutzoukos (grape sweet) in older times - due to urbanization, there are now only a few harvesters and grape producers left.

According to tradition, the village got its name from Lana, daughter of Dionysus, God of Wine, or it may be derived from the word ‘valania’ (acorn), due to the fruit of the oak trees growing abundantly in the region.
