Stop At: Glenkinchie Distillery, Pencaitland EH34 5ET Scotland

The home of ‘The Edinburgh Malt’ is located in the rolling farmland of East Lothian and houses an excellent exhibition in the listed red brick buildings. In 1825, farmers John and George Rate built and operated the distillery under the name Milton Distillery until it was licenced and renamed in 1837.

    Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Melrose Abbey, Abbey Street, Melrose TD6 9LG Scotland

Probably the most famous ruin in Scotland, the abbey was founded by David I in 1136 for the Cistercian Order, and it was largely destroyed by Richard II’s English army in 1385. The exterior of this magnificent ruin is decorated by unusual sculptures, including hobgoblins, cooks with ladles and a bagpipe playing pig.

    Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Jedburgh Abbey, 4/5 Abbey Bridge End, Jedburgh TD8 6JQ Scotland

Explore the fascinating Jedburgh Abbey along with its visitor centre and surrounding herb garden with aromatic plants and a stone display at the west end. The church was built in the Romanesque and early Gothic styles and is remarkably complete.

    Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Abbotsford House Abbotsford, Melrose TD6 9BQ Scotland

Abbotsford is the extraordinary home of the 19th century novelist – Sir Walter Scott, who popularised tartan, saved the Scottish banknote and rediscovered his country’s Crown.

Stop At: Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum, Castlegate Jedburgh, Borders, Scotland, TD8 6QD, Jedburgh TD8 6BD Scotland

It was fought over during the Wars of Scottish Independence, and was demolished by the Scots commanded by Sir James Douglas of Balvenie in 1409. The building has also gained a reputation for ghostly sightings!

    Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Neidpath Castle, Tweeddale, on A72, Peebles EH45 8NW Scotland

Neidpath Castle sits in a commanding position above the River Tweed. It is an unspoilt 14th century Keep, last modernised in the 1600s. Equipped with a dungeon, well, long-drops and fireplaces large enough to roast an ox, there are also a set of exquisite 20th century batiks, telling the story of Mary Queen of Scots, who stayed at the castle.

    Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Fatlips Castle, Minto Crags, Hawick Scotland

Fatlips Castle is a pele tower in Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders. Situated at the top of Minto Crags, above the River Teviot, it was built in the 16th century by the Turnbulls of Barnhills, notorious Border reivers, and owners of nearby Barnhills Tower and farm.

    Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Scott's View, St. Boswells TD6 0AP Scotland

Take in this splendid view of the Scottish borders, which was once Sir Walter Scott’s favourite. The flat piece of land that lies within a loop in the river was once the site of the first Melrose Abbey, of which nothing remains today.
